Midjourney, the AI image generation startup, has published a behind-the-scenes video of its experimental medical scanner. The device — described by company engineer Marcin Plaza as "scores of ultrasound probes hacked apart and slapped on a glorified hot tub with an elevator in it" — uses off-the-shelf components and Raspberry Pi units to capture full-body ultrasound scans without radiation.
The company envisions deploying these scanners in spas, offering consumers affordable, detailed imaging outside clinical settings. However, Midjourney has not yet published peer-reviewed validation data or demonstrated diagnostic accuracy against established modalities. The demo shows an imaging phantom scan, but clinical efficacy remains unproven.
Radiologists and regulatory experts caution that ultrasound interpretation requires significant expertise. False positives could drive unnecessary follow-up procedures, while false negatives might delay critical diagnoses. The FDA clearance pathway for such a novel form factor is also unclear.
If validated, the technology could expand access to preventive imaging. But the gap between prototype and clinical tool remains wide.
